Social Awareness: Identifying the Key Traits of Interpersonal Connection
Course Synopsis
Interpersonal connection isn’t just “chatting”—it’s a dynamic process shaped by five core characteristics:
• Independent Individuals
Everyone brings unique motivations, expectations, and interpretations (e.g., two team members can hear the same feedback yet walk away with different takeaways).
• Vulnerability
Real connection requires self-exposure—sharing thoughts, feelings, and your authentic lens on the world.
• Innate Rationality
Communication assumes shared intelligence and intent. As demonstrated in Milgram’s obedience study, we expect messages to be understood and even followed.
• Constant & Inescapable
Whether you’re speaking, texting, or simply present in a room, you’re always sending messages—verbal or not.
• Personal Choice
Every word and gesture is a deliberate choice, making connection a skill you can learn and refine.
